Results October 2018 : Mission Reduce our Grocery Spending

Our mission to Reduce our Grocery Spending was launched on August 20. In ten weeks we’ve reduced our 2018 grocery average from $256/week to $229/week. That’s over $1400 less on a yearly basis so it’s definitely worth the extra hour it takes me to plan out our shopping for the week.

Specifically for the first ten weeks of grocery shopping our weekly average is $140 to feed our family of 4.

This month we had a few celebrations where we hosted family and friends for yummy meals: Thanksgiving, our oldest’s 4th birthday as well as just occasional hangouts. We still have next week to include in this update but for these first 4 weeks of October we’ve hit 405$ in grocery spending which I’m quite happy with, especially considering I strayed a bit from the menu planning for two weeks as we were busy with renovations & various other activities.

On the downside, we have been spendier in terms of eating out these last couple of months. Our average in these categories was 270$/month as of September 1st, and I am expecting it to be back at around 290$/month after October. The urge is strong to blame lots of disruption around having to finish off some renovations before winter but the truth is we have to make a bit more effort, even when our schedules are crazy, to avoid the easy but expensive and unhealthy take out option.

I’ll consolidate our detailed updates by month (with the most recent week on the top of the post) and I will keep track of our overall progress on the page Results : Grocery.

Overview:

After a couple of weeks going without a menu, we are finally back to the meal planning habit that we want to keep up. It makes life so much easier to know what we will be eating ahead of time and also avoids the temptation to eat out.

This weekend we are hosting some friends and family for some Halloween celebration therefore we got lots of tasty and unhealthy snacks such a frozen pizza, tostitos and wings, which will go well with whatever dishes our company brings over in a good old potluck fashion. Otherwise as mentioned above we will be making some good spaghetti sauce.

Week beginning on October 15 2018:

Visits to grocery stores : 2

One quick trip at Provigo and I also picked up some apples while at Walmart.

This was a great week for our average. We decided to do a “clean out the fridge” week after it got a little out of control with back to back weekends of hosting celebrations.

Overview:

This week we went menu-less mostly because life had been very busy the last few weeks (or months) and I was feeling really burned out, but also partly because we realized our fridge and freezer were stocked up with leftover thanksgiving and party food that we should eat before it spoiled.

The main trip to the grocery store was to take advantage of a deal on whole chickens (2 for 10$ + my PC offer of 100 points for every 1$ spent on poultry = 1.70/lb) and grab a few things to whip up some delicious pho.

There was a deal on bags of chips for 2 for 6$ but I grabbed the wrong bag and ended up paying full price for both bags for a total of $7.08. It really is not a huge difference, however I am pointing it out as I wouldn’t have noticed it unless I was keeping track of my receipts for this update. As I keep up with this tracking, I’ve noticed a few occasions where I’ve made similar mistakes when buying stuff on a whim while at the store or based off of in store sales sign. All the more reason to keep up with the planning and stick with the shopping list.

Overview:

While I did plan out our grocery shopping for the party preparations, I did not make a menu this week for our own meals, which resulted in last minute take-out twice. The list above doesn’t include a few different dishes Mr. Mod’s dad and my parents kindly offered to prepare for the party .

The birthday party went incredibly well and all our son’s little friends enjoyed their meals as well as our friends and family. Even after sending some Tupperware filled with leftovers with some of our guests, we still ended up with a lot of food after the party. I tend to go overboard food-wise for these types of events and it normally costs us a lot more but with the planning as well as price matching, I feel like we got quite a lot of food for a good price.
